      As part of SERVER-129868, validateShardIds was introduced in the documentSourceMergeCursorsToStageFn; however, an argument can be made that this could belong to the constructor of MergeCursorsStage instead.

      This is a follow-up to actually test if this is possible and do it, or otherwise document why it's not.
