Given that MongoDB has storage engines with options, and these options should greatly increase and be very impactful on performance with btree vs LSM, column vs row, etc, it would be helpful is the default storage engine options were stored in the replica set and by default MongoDB used that. This will provide unexpected performance problems when resyncing etc.
