SERVER-23299 provides a behavior to minimize the impact of SERVER-23274 when upgrading to later 3.2 and all 3.4 versions from 3.2.0 through 3.2.4. Once 3.4 is branched off of master, we should remove the code in db.cpp and the multiversion tests added to confirm this functionality, as it will be dead code in 3.5 and later.
