After requesting backport of SERVER-35419, we realized there are some interesting upgrade downgrade concerns. After some manual testing, everything seems to work as we expect it should, and it doesn't cause any data corruptions or crashes. However, it was an oversight not to add an automated test for this case. This ticket tracks the work to automate this test.
