The replication step down process has many steps and they can be tricky to follow. For example, the stepDown method of ReplicationCoordinatorImpl (which is over 150 lines long) has almost no log messages indicating the different phases and actions that are being executed during the step down attempt. It could be helpful to print more information during step down to aid debugging.
