Do something about 4.4 branch running background validation implicitly on 4.2 nodes

      4.4 allows a background validation mode that only takes a collection IX lock. However, the `background: true` usage is ignored on 4.2 which results in foreground (MODE_X) validation running concurrently with tests. Some tests assume that their operations never conflict with locking.
