Recent changes to the steps of the critical section have increased its length such that the performance jstest watchdog no longer passes, and had to be added to an exclude list. This ticket will cover two tasks:

• Improve the existing performance test to include newly added critical section steps
• Identify (and hopefully resolve) performance bottlenecks so we can regain an acceptable critical section length
