       SERVER-78615 and its subsequent bug fix SERVER-89285 were originally committed on 8.0 with the goal of improving performance. We then discovered that the implementation was still buggy due to (SERVER-90360), so then we decided to revert the performance improments.

      After SERVER-90360 is fixed we can re-commit the original performance improvements changes (SERVER-78615 + SERVER-89285).
