The pre-fetch functionality uses a number of constants such as WT_MAX_PREFETCH_QUEUE, WT_PREFETCH_QUEUE_PER_TRIGGER, and the number of pre-fetch worker threads to spawn. Once some WiredTiger performance tests have been implemented, use these to experiment with different values for these constants and compare the values of relevant statistics.
