@agorrod, some minor cleanups and I added LZ4 to format runs.

Wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not, is there any reason not to add LZ4 to the mix?

Anyway, for your consideration – if you don't want the test format runs, they're a separate commit so you can easily discard them.
