Problem

The page-delta cleanup path can dereference s[0] when the merge-state pointer is NULL after an early initialization failure, causing an OOM-only crash and leak.

Proposed work

• Make the delta-leaf cleanup path NULL-safe on every partial-initialization path.

• Ensure partially allocated merge state is released exactly once on OOM/error exits.

• Add focused error-injection coverage for early initialization failure and cleanup.
