Based on the description of the auto preview toggle in the Compass documentation, it seems like having it disabled would prevent Compass from loading and displaying documents. However, Compass 1.17.0 seems to display the document regardless of the state of the auto preview toggle.  The screenshot below comes from disabling the auto preview and then disabling and reenabling stages in the aggregation pipeline builder.
