SERVER-119597 added counters to differentiate between two phase commit in internal transactions and user-initiated transactions through RouterTransactionsMetrics. Adding the same classification (internal vs. external) to other transaction metrics (eg. the TransactionCoordinator, TransactionParticipant) might be useful because we do have internal transactions on replica sets and might give us insight into customer usage rates of transactions.
However adding these metrics would mean creating a clean definition for internal vs. external transactions (not just 2pc), which doesn't exist cleanly yet. We should determine whether this is worth doing.
