Data from Evergreen runs show the failures between [replica_sets_auth and replica_sets], [sharding_auth_audit and sharding], [multiversion and multiversion_auth], etc. are highly correlated. Given that the _auth variations authenticate as the most-privileged __system user, it seems unlikely for these test suites to be providing any meaningful signal around the access control system. A review of the failures which uniquely occurred during the _auth and _auth_audit variations is still needed to confirm true coverage is not being lost by their removal.
