On some systems the time incurred in executing global_calibrate_ticks is noticeable and the single most time consuming piece of wiredtiger_open, particularly on a clean, empty database.
We should investigate on as many different systems as we can (AWS, our server machines like kodkod, PPC, zSeries, MacOS, Windows) to see how small we can make the CPU intensive loop without losing accuracy in the ratio computed.
